Q: High insulin levels with normal blood sugar?
I have recently had a fasting glucose test. The results have come back that i have normal blood sugar levels, but my insulin has come back as 41 when it should be 12. I have PCOS and know that it is playing a large part in my insulin level. I want to know if Insulin resistance could be causing me to put on large amounts of weight and if so, how I can lose it. I exercise and have a really good diet, but don’t know why I am putting on mass amounts of weight.

A: Read up on “metabolic syndrome”. Your elevated insulin levels are directly related to your insulin resistance. Yes insulin resistance is related to weight gain. Excess insulin causes fat storage. The cure is relatively simple. Your body is getting too many “empty” Calories and insufficient nutrients. Either you don’t exercise enough or your “really good diet” isn’t really a good diet (or both). I don’t mean to be harsh, but the facts are the facts. We wouldn’t have the epidemic proportions of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, etc. if more people came to grips with the simple fact that man made foods are simply not good for you. Our bodies are optimized for Natural foods and moderate daily activity. (the foods that were created for us). Once you start to dig for the truth, it will become evident.

Q: Normal blood sugar levels for a 13 year old girl?
I have no diabetes or high blood sugar, etc, but my dad and my grandpa both do, so, my dad wanted to check my blood sugar, just in case. It read 97 (but this was at like 11:00 p.m. after i ate what i ate for the day.) Basically, can someone please tell me the normal levels for a 13 year old girl? Or any foods i should stay away from so that i don’t get diabetes, high blood sugar, etc.? Also, is 97 too high/low or is it ok? (my dad said it was pretty high)

A: your dad is wrong. 97 is a perfectly normal number, i assure you.
normal levels for 13 yr olds are the same as the normal blood sugar levels for everyone else, which are now 70-110 (altho i still go by 80-120).
foods you may want to stay away from are extremely sugary things- like regular sodas, cakes, donuts, etc. (altho you can eat/drink these occasionally, but just make sure it’s in moderation).
just make sure you’re including fruits and veggies and the recommended grains and meats in your meals. and make sure to include some daily exercise and you should be ok :)

Q: Is it possible to have a high insulin but normal blood sugar levels.?
I have chronic fatigue syndrome, and have had my blood sugar etc tested, but wondered if i should go in and have a insulin test done. I recently read a book about a man with CFS, who had normal blood tests but a high insulin level when tested.
thanks a lot.

A: Yes, it is entirely possible, but this would indicate that you most probably have insulin resistance, a forerunner to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus, and would NOT last for very long. (Your insulin levels would remain high, but your glucose level would, eventually begin to rise.)

Insulin resistance is where your body’s cells can’t properly use the insulin that your pancreas still produces. It therefore produces more than would be ‘normal’, until it can’t keep up with the demands placed on it.

Q: What are normal blood sugar levels when checking on an Accu-Check Machine?
On the internet it says between 70 and 150 mg on most websites but I dont know what that translates into when it comes to checking your blood at home. Any help would be appreciated.

No trolls please. Thanks.

A: It translates exactly the same. The normal blood sugar should be 70-120 (depends on who you ask) and the accu-check machine should be those numbers. There is no translation to it.

Q: WHat is normal blood sugar levels after eating?
I am not a diabetic but it does run in my family! But i decided to check my blood sugar tonight while my aunt was checking hers! when i did it….it said 80 and that was like an hour after i ate! IS this normal! I thought that it would be really high because of what all i ate!

A: Nothing to worry its normal.
Normals are from 65 to 100 fasting. Don’t worry about non fasting numbers. Anything under 100 is Normal!

Most normal people go up to about 150 or so after eating a normal meal then come back down to under 100 in less than 2 hours.

Q: During pregnancy what is considered a normal blood sugar levels?
When I test my blood sugar (by prickin’ my finger) what range of numbers should I see? I tested this morning at it was 101.. I then took the pill that I was prescribed. What’s normal?!

A: A normal range is 60-120. When you are pregnant, it is common to see lower numbers than average, but it should never fall below 60.

Q: What are normal blood sugar levels?
Hello, can anyone tell me if I should be concerned of a blood sugar level of 55 out of a range of 65 to 99. Is that considered hypoglycemia?

A: It may be normal for you , but if mine gets that low, I am sweating and trembling and ready to pass out.

Q: what are the normal blood sugar (glucose) levels fasting and non fasting?
i was wondering what are the normals fasting and non fasting blood sugar levels when you are not diabetic.
should it be 5 and under before eating and say 7 and under after eating for example!

A: Normal fasting glucose levels are between 80-90 mg/dL. 90-100 mg/dL is considered pre-diabetic and above 100 mg/dL is diabetic.

Nonfasting levels should not exceed 200 mg/dL. The readings will vary with the amount/type of food you eat and how long ago you ate.

Q: Blood sugar levels in normal people?
What is the normal blood sugar level in a normal person without diabetes after they eat some kind of sugar or something?

A: I got these numbers from my doctor who is an endocrinologist, and also from the ADA. We also discussed them in one of my diabetic ed. classes

Readings for those that do NOT have diabetes

Fasting….70 to 100
2 hours after a meal …70 to 140

Q: What are normal Blood Sugar levels in 2 & a half year old kid.?
I tested my son and his sugar was about 208 and i was wondering if you think he has diabetes?I am going to take him to the doctor tomorrow to make sure but i was wanting your opinion
~My mom and dad has diabetes
~Im starting to get all the symptoms of low bloodsugar i have an appointment with the doc next week.
~My son ate potatoes and some of an egg for breakfast.
~He also ate sanwich and a hand full of cheezits
For lunch.

A: Though I can understand your concern (I went through a comparable episode with my 4-year old a while back -you can read the details on the page I linked below), definitely your best bet is to take your kid to the doctor for testing.

At 2 years of age blood sugar levels are not the same that they are in an adult. Having said that, it sounds like 208 is a bit elevated even for a kid.

Best of luck with the doctor. Hope it’s nothing but a scare and hope this info helps.

Q: What are normal blood sugar levels supposed to be at?
What are normal blood sugar levels supposed to be before meals & what are they supposed to be after meals?

I tested my blood sugar before I ate anything and it was 130. Is that a normal level?

I’ve never been tested for diabetes but I decided to start checking my blood sugar levels because I havent been feeling right lately.

I feel ill everyday. Before I eat meals my whole body shakes and I feel really nervous and sick like Im gonna pass out. My hands shake so much its hard to function. Then when I do eat something I feel so tired that I can barely move.

Advice please??

A: Think the normal blood sugar is around 100. 130 is a little high for a pre-meal reading. The shaking sounds like too low a blood sugar, though. But, I don’t know what to say about tiredness.

See a doctor about this, since other factors may be at work.

Q: What are concidered to be good (normal)blood sugar levels in adults?

A: There are various methods to determine blood glucose level. Some tests give you accurate diagnosis of diabetes or pre-diabetes, while others will tell you how well you are managing your diabetes.

Fasting Blood Sugar Test:
Measures the blood sugar level after 8 hours fast or overnight. Normal fasting blood glucose level is less than 100mg/dl. If your fasting blood glucose level is from 100mg/dl to 125mg/dl then you will have impaired blood glucose level also known as Pre-Diabetes. If your blood glucose level is above 125mg/dl then your doctor will diagnose as a patient of diabetes. To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor may repeat the fasting blood glucose test on any other day. If you have blood glucose level of 126mg/dl or higher in two consecutive tests, then you may have diabetes. If you have blood glucose level greater than 200mg/dl and you have symptoms of diabetes like increased thirst or hunger, frequent urination, weight loss, blurred vision etc, then you may be diagnosed with diabetes mellitus without confirming it with second test.

Random Blood Glucose Test:
Random blood Glucose test gives your blood sugar at any time in a day. Normal random blood sugar level should be less than 200mg/dl. If your random blood glucose level is between 140mg/dl to 200mg/dl then you will have pre-diabetes.

Oral glucose tolerance test
This test measures your response to sugar. First we measure fasting blood glucose level, and then glucose solution is given, after that we measure blood glucose after 1 hour and 2hours. A normal blood glucose level after an oral glucose tolerance test is less than 140 mg/dL. Level between 140 mg/dL to 199 mg/dL suggests pre-diabetes. A blood glucose level of 200 mg/dL or higher two hours after you drink the glucose solution may suggest that you have diabetes mellitus.

Glycated hemoglobin (A1C) test
This test is not for diagnosing diabetes, but it shows you how well you have controlled your sugar in last 2 or 3 months. Normal value is less than 7%, however if it is more than 7 then you and your doctor should think of changing your treatment of diabetes.

Always Remember, your blood glucose measurement alone is not enough to differentiate between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Your doctor may do some other tests to find out which type of diabetes you have.

Q: What is the range for normal blood sugar levels when fasting?
Is it 5-7 ??

A: Sounds like you are outside the USA. In the USA they use a different system, and the normal range is 70 to 100.

Pretty much everywhere else, the normal fasting range is about 4 to 5.5

Between 5.5 and 6.9 is prediabetic.

Above 7.0 is diabetic, but it must be confirmed by two tests, because it can go up if you have an infection.

Q: What is a normal blood sugar level for a slight 8yo child?
My boy 27kg and thin, had a blood sugar test today, and it came back at 7.5mmol.

Is this a normal level for a child? I know it is on the high end for an adult, but can’t find anything on what is normal for a child.

Is it high enough to have him tested for diabetes?

A: It depends when the test was done. Normal level after an 8 hour fast is less than 5.5 mmoles, however in a normal individual it will rise to as high as 7.9mmoles 2 hours after eating.
