Q: What other meds can I take for diabetes type 2 besides going on insulin?
I have tried Actos & Avandia in the past (retained water like crazy). I have also tried Metformin (my stomach cannot handle even 500mg). I have been taking only Januvia for a month, but it is not helping to control it enough. I eat a fairly good diabetic diet and walk every day. Should I get stricter still with my diet & exercise even more?

A: Doctor should have started you out on half the tablet to start with. He should also have told you to take it WITH food, never on empty stomach. It will always cause digestive upsets this way. He should also have suggested you take Pepto or Tums type meds with it if it gave you digestive upsets.

Actos and Avandia both have a notorious history of causing edema! I tried both and cannot take them.

There are 8 classes of meds of which you have only tried 3 other than insulin. And if you are insulin resistant it does no good to push more insulin into the system if it isn’t working to help the muscles use the glucose available.

the 2 first meds are usually Metformin and Glyburide. But be aware that just because Met in the formulation you were taking upset your stomach, not all the generic manufacturers of this drug use the same “inert ingredients” for fillers. It might have been the filler you can’t take.

I cannot take a couple of the generic Met formulations. But I can take the Metformin XR! Yes, it does occasionally mess with my stomach, giving me gas and acidic stomach and sometimes diarrhea as well.

You say you are following a good diabetic diet. That doesn’t say much because the Am Diab Assn recommends just smaller servings of the same Food Pyramid that caused this problem. High Complex Carbs in great number!!!

Do away with all the bottom layer of the current Food Pyramid for a month and see if it doesn’t help a great deal. I also have a problem with any soft sweet fruits. I eat crispy tart apples for most of my fruits.

Q: Can someone with diabetes type 2 drink coffee?
I want to give Italian coffee from my trip to Italy to a friend of mine, but she has T2Diabetes.

A: Coffee, tea, etc are fine without sugar. They are also fine with an artificial sweetener. Warning though, and I am sure your friend knows this: consuming too many caffinated beverages can cause your sugar levels to go low. So drink in moderation.

Q: What is the best diet for someone border-liner with diabetes type 2?
I´ve just found out I am almost becoming diabetic. I am living right now in the middle of the Amazon forest, with no access to doctors. What should I avoid eating in order not to rise my sugar levels?

A: please visit this site you can get good answers.Get well soon!!!

Q: which is the best medicine to cure diabetes type 2 with minimum side effects?
1 metaformin with pioz and glimipride
2 vildaglyptin
3 sitaglyptin
4 sexaglyptin
or any new medicine
before answerin g the question just go through the salts and side effects of the same as this is not a simple question it may be very helpful for the cure of many patients who do not know the latest developments in the field of diabetis

A: Sahil, I think you mean best meds to treat diabetes.
I think Pioz is Actos. I would never take this drug. It’s too dangerous.Heart problems , bone loss.Even eye problems.

Also I would not take combination drugs. Metformin is great(Max dosage is 2500 mg)
Glimepride is also good.
Why not take combo drugs? Well how would you adjust the dosage?

I take 2000mg. Metformin plus 2 mg. Glimipride. My fasting is 96 and my HBA1C is 5.2
But these great numbers have a lot to do with the fact that I Nordic Walk 1 1/2 hours a day , 7 days a week. Also my Blood pressure and Cholesterol is normal due to the exercise.
None of the new drugs are tested enough , so stick with the tried and true.
Take care

Q: What would be considered low for having low blood pressure? And can you have Type 2 diabetes with low b/p?
Dont know what low blood pressure means when you have the diabetes type 2….

A: Low BP is only when it is low enough to cause symptoms, there is no real strict cutoff number. However, most people would consider less than 90 (for the top number – the systolic) to be low. Symptoms would be dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue or even passing out – especially when going from sitting to standing. There is NO correlation of low BP and Diabetes. You could have both but “low BP” is not really a disease, unlike Type 2 Diabetes.

Q: What is the difference between diabetes type-1 and type-2?
How can I understand this?

A: Type 1 is when you are required to take insulin. Type 2 is when you can control your diabetes with diet and exercise.

Q: Do people with diabetes type 2 gain or lose weight?
My dad whose a doctor says they gain weight over time, but online I read they lose weight so I am confused.
The person is a 25 year old woman. I read that 70% of women diagnosed with diabetes type 2 are obese to begin with. So will she lose weight overtime?

What other things to expect from 25 years old?

A: Being overweight or obese (especially when the fat is in the abdomen) increases the body’s insulin needs, and losing this extra weight can significantly improve diabetes control. Often the weight loss can eliminate the need for medications altogether. You do not have to lose a huge amount of weight—a 5 percent loss in body weight is sufficient.

Here are some basic concepts about weight loss:

• Weight loss occurs when there is a negative energy balance. If you consume fewer kilocalories than you expend, you will lose weight. This is the principle behind all weight-loss diets, and there are no exceptions to this rule. If you reduce the number of calories you eat by about 500 kilocalories per day, you will lose about one pound in weight per week.

• Physiologically, we are designed to avoid eating too little. The mechanisms of the body evolved when there was less food available than we have now, and these mechanisms are designed to avoid weight loss. With environmental changes and the ready availability of highly dense calories (that is, lots of calories in a small portion size), it takes very little excess caloric intake on a daily basis to gain a considerable amount of weight over time. It is estimated that in the United States, over 90 percent of the weight gain seen in adults results from a positive energy balance of less than 100 kcal a day. It is very easy to get into a positive energy balance (more calories consumed than expended)—for example, a two-ounce candy bar such as Snickers has 273 kcals.

• The body’s energy requirement goes down when you lose weight and as you age. About 70 percent of your energy requirement is for the basic life processes, and the other 30 percent is for activity related to eating, working, and walking. Your energy requirements go down as you age and as your weight goes down. So as you lose weight, your energy requirements fall, and you will need to reduce the number of calories you consume further for continued weight loss.

Q: Can you recommend any Herbal/natural teas/supplements for PREVENTING type 2 diabetes?
I would like to know of any HERBAL OR NATURAL teas or supplements that can PREVENT the onset of diabetes TYPE 2.

A: According to a recent study coffee will do that.

Q: How Diabetes Type 2 works and how it can be helped?
I’m wondering how it works and how to tell my friends and My Fiance that my uncle has it!!!!! It’s so stressfull be far away from home!!!

A: Basically type 2 diabetes is when the body breaksdown sugars faster then it can create insulin. Unlike Type 1 where the insulin production is limited, type 2 just simply states that there is too much sugar in the blood stream. The good thing about this form of diabetes, its easily controlled through diet and exercise. Mostly overweight and elderly people get this diease, but it has been known for younger individuals to get it as well.
Telling your family is easy, just educate yourself on the diease and explain its an easily controlled diease and many people live long happy lives with it. Remember, Type 2 Diabetes is controllable, and with weight control, diet and exercise, a person can live a long happy life.

Q: What are some side affects of diabetes type 2?
I am doing a report and im too lazy to look it up :)

A: Well lazy boy i have it and can tell you all. first thing you notice is a constant thirst. Also there is a diminished nerve endings such as numb hands and feet this also affects bladder control as well in some peopole like me . You lose alot of weight if you are heavy from all the peeing. YOU BECOME MOODY LIKE WEIRD MOOD SWINGS. no that wasnt one of them just hit the caps button by mistake lol. In the long run it affects your heart and other things as well like ciculation of blood is diminished. Also if you get to low on sugar in the blood you can slip in a dibetic coma and die from it. Anything else u want to know just ask and i will tell.

Q: What are the problems in the female reproductive system linked to diabetes type 2?
Also, do you know any websites (other that have .com and WIKIPEDIA) where it has that information?
I’ve been having a hard time searching the web. Thank you in advance! =)

A: Diabetes in general would complicate pregnancies, resulting in high birth weights, post-partum hypoglycemia in the neonate, injuries during delivery, and caudal regression syndrome. As for the reproductive system directly, I don’t believe there’s any specific complications to the mother in terms of getting pregnant or menstrual cycles.

Q: What percent of the American population has diabetes type 1 and type 2?

A: 7.8% of the total population.

5~10% of those are Type 1, the other 90~95% are Type 2.

Q: What’s the best way to overcome diabetes type 2?
i am currently trying diet and exercise, but sometimes I have to exercise too much, for comfort and then i still end up not exercising after the biggest meal of the day.

A: No short cut to diet and exercise.

Q: Diabetes type 2 What goes on inside your body or blood?
I was watching Dr OZ on tv and he said that diabetes is like glass in your cells or blood or I don’t know.
Does anyone know about this?? What is going on inside your body? I need to know. Thank you

A: dont believe dr oz…i seen a show where he checked carnie wilsons blood sugar and it was 100 and he diagnosed her as prediabetic..not saying when the last time she ate or anything…i was not impressed.

Q: Diabetes type 2 but no meds, where can I find more info?
My husband was diognosed with diabetes but was not prescribed meds. I am adjusting his diet and he is normal weight and exercises regularly.

He wasn’t even given a way to test his blood sugar. Is this right or should I kick a fuss?

A: You can buy a blood tester in most chemist shops, or ask for a referral to a diabetes care clinic and he will get one free. he will probably have to buy his own test strips though and they are expensive…usually around £30 for 50 strips.
He and you also need expert advic on his diet, get a dietician referral. He will need his eyes checked yearly for diabetic retinopathy and should have a yearly physical to test for other diabetic complications. He will also need a 6 monthly or yearly blood test to test his HBA1C (the test fro long term control effectiveness). He may also need treatment for cholesterol levels, diabetics usually have raised levels and are generally put on statins as a preventative measure. You husband is also entitled to a foot assesment because of teh possible side effects on the feet.
Just because he isnt on meds does not make him less at risk.
I would say first stop is to go back to the doctor and ask for the appropriate referrals, if the doctor refuses, report him and get another doctor!
