Q: jaw pain??????
i’ve been having jaw pain for about 3 years now.. the dentist said it would go away after i got my wisdom teeth out. its been about 6 months sense i got my wisdom teeth out and it still feels the same. before i got them out, my dentist took an xray of the jaw.. one of the muscels is swollen.and it hurts if i open my mouth to wide. anyone know what this might be and how i can get it fixed?

A: You could have TMJ

I have had it since I was a teenager.

Q: Jaw Pain…?
I have been having pain in my jaw on the right side and it feels like I have (wisdom) teeth coming in behind my top molars. I have not had an X-ray of my teeth in some time. Is it possible that my jaw pain is related to an impacted wisdom tooth trying to come in?

A: It could be possible. If you’ve been opening your mouth wide (yawning, inspecting the area that hurts, etc), resting the right side of your face on things (your hand, arm, etc) for support or even chewing gum, it’s also possible that you’ve been placing an extensive amount of stress on your jaw.

Q: Jaw pain ??
i found out recently that i tend to clench my teeth really hard when i sleep and in the morning in have terrible jaw pains that can last most of the day, making eating, speaking and even laughing painful . what can i do ?

like is there a way to not clench my teeth while sleeping or is there anything to ease the pain when it’s too late that’s not medication ?!

thanks, and cheers.

A: your dentist will be able to give a thing to put in your mouth while you sleep so you don’t clench your teeth… its a bit guard

Q: Pain in my jaw hinge area causing headache after a root canal. How long will it last?
Had a broken tooth for a couple of years. About a month ago, it really started to hurt. The pain became unbearable. Went to the dentist and he took out the broken piece and fitted a temporary cap. Then I had terrible jaw pain which led to a root canal about two days ago. It took 8 shots to numb my mouth and it was open for nearly an hour or so. The pain is radiating from my hinge areas up the sides of my head creating this awful headache. How long will this last?

A: Hello there! I feel your pain. I too just have had extensive dental work done. Ok, beside the fact that a root canal is very painful in and by itself, holding your jaw open for that extended period of time can cause a lot of inflammation. More than you already have from the dental work done. From your other symptoms, I am assuming that it was in one of you back molars. This makes it worse, because that pain can radiated to the exact places that you are describing. If you are experiencing clicking of that joint when you open or close your mouth, you need to go back and tell them. That means that the Temporal Mandibular Joint has been pushed to the max and there may be a tear in either the muscle or one of the ligaments that hold that joint together. This is something that needs to be addressed. Most often, it is due to error on the part of the dentist, so do not let them take advantage of you. Otherwise, if none of the above is true, some motrin and some soft food along with not stressing that joint will be the cure. If however, this lasts for more than a week, you need to go back and find out what has happened. I hope that you feel better very soon and that this has been helpful to you. JOSEPH…A temporary filling with an anesthetic agent is available and will help you in the short run. Far less expensive! At least it may give you some time to get some money together. Also, check to see if there are any Dental schools near you. They do the work for far less. You will be treated by interns, but overseen by a dentist. I have done this in the past and have had great results! BTW….JOSEPH, very important. The maximum daily dosage for Tylenol is 4gms or 4000mg. Any more than that is toxic. Tylenol is very easy to overdose on and has catastrophic effects to your liver that you may not know about for a long time. Motrin, on the other hand has a maximum daily dosage of 2400mgs, but if you take 4 tabs 3 times a day, that should help you greatly and it will take some inflammation down as well.

Q: What does it mean to have jaw pain when trying to bite?
I can’t fully close my jaw(teeth touching) without a feeling of pressure/pain on my right side only. Hard to chew food on right side since teeth don’t touch. What is going on?

A: it could be that since your bite is not even meaning your teeth dont touch on all sides when you bite, that you are putting a lot of pressure on one tooth, which is causing it to hurt. this can be fixed by going to your dentist and having them even out your bite.
or
it could be that you have a really big filling in one tooth that has gone into the nerve and caused and infection. the infection causes pressure in your jaw and in turn causes pain when you bite down.
you will need to see your dentist for that as well

Q: Is it normal to have minor jaw pain during a cold?
I have a bad cold and I’m experiencing some minor jaw pain. I don’t believe it’s a tooth problem as it is not in just one concentrated area but over my entire jaw. Can the congestion from the cold cause it?

A: I’m a dentist.

It could be the lymph nodes underneath your jaw (i.e. sumbandibular lymphadenopathy), which would subside as your cold goes away.

Of course, it could be something more serious than an upper respiratory infection, i.e. perhaps an odontogenic infection making you sick.

Regardless, see your physician or dentist to have it checked out.

Q: Is it normal to have chest and jaw pain after a bee sting?
Okay my dad was stung by a bee yesterday and now he is really tired.
His chest and jaw are also in some pain. What should we do?

A: Does you dad have history of heart problems? It may be an allergic reaction that could be leading to angina. Chest pain and jaw pain can be symptoms of cardiac problems. Is he pale, sweaty, nauseous? May want to go to urgent care after you read this and his symptoms are what is described below.

The following is from americanheart.org

Heart Attack Warning Signs
Some heart attacks are sudden and intense — the “movie heart attack,” where no one doubts what’s happening. But most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening:
Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness
As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

Q: Does anybody know any remedies on how to ease jaw pain?
My friend’s jaw hurts really bad and is swollen, does anybody know any good remedies to soothe jaw pain?
Also, the cause of the pain is beacuse her molers were hurting then it got worse when her little brother kicked her in the face were it had hurt in the first place.

A: you may not believe this, but my aunt has to suck on SOUR Balls or Sour Lemon Drops. THIS DOES HELP!!!! it’s the only thing that does help her… anything sour & hard… yes, this is a serious answer!

Q: What is the source of my ear and jaw pain?
I had my wisdom teeth removed about a month ago with no problems. However, in the past couple of days I’ve been experiencing excruciating jaw pain in only one side of my mouth when I bite down or open my mouth too wide, and the pain runs all the way up my cheek to my left ear. What could this be caused by? I’m worried that the holes where my wisdom teeth were removed could have become infected, would this do it? Please help!

A: I would think that the sockets where your wisdom teeth were should be mostly healed by now. If one of them was infected it should be inflamed and sore.

I would have your dentist check to see if you have TMJ. By having your wisdom teeth removed, your other teeth may have moved. If your bite is off (it’s how your top teeth fit together with your bottom teeth) it can cause you jaw pain and give you headaches.

I have been wearing braces for over two years because of TMJ (I’m 36 yrs old). Once my bite was stabilized my headaches stopped in less than two days.

Q: what could be a cause of severe headache accompanied with toothache and jaw pain in the right side?
I have this right sided headache with toothache and jaw pain. I consulted a doctor already an took sinus medicine but the pain is still here and it become severe every time I lay down on my pillow. please help.

A: Sounds like you have an infection that is spreading beyond the tooth that started it. The swelling puts pressure on the nerves, which creates the pain. The spreading infection creates swelling wherever it goes. The white blood cells attack the infection, creating more pressure. If you can identify it as a tooth that started it, then you need a to see a dentist. The doctor that you saw should have given you antibiotics to fight the infection.

Q: What are the treatments for TMJ Jaw Pain?
I have hard time opening and closing my mouth because it hurts. I felt that my jaw muscle is really tight! I think I have TMJ Jaw Pain. So, do anyone know the treatment for it?
Thanks a bunch!
**I went to the doctor today but the doctor office is close.

A: i had the same thing and they gave me an arthrocentesis and i wear a mouth guard now

Q: Jaw Pain when opening mouth, and my wisdom teeth feel like they are coming thru is this related?
I have been experiencing jaw pain when trying to open my mouth wide – I also have wisdom teeth coming through on my left side top and bottom do you think these are related or is it a possible tooth infection

A: Your pain could be coming from your wisdom teeth or it could be coming from your jaw causing TMJ. See your dentist, he is the only person who can actually diagnose your problem. It could be that you are exp. pain from crowding which sometimes comes from wisdom teeth. Good Luck

Q: I am having severe tooth and jaw pain, what can I do to stop it?
I had a wisdom tooth removed 2 weeks ago. Now at the site of the anesthetic shot my jaw is swollen and I am having shooting pain from my jaw to the front of my teeth. The pain is so bad that I can’t sleep, and gets worse when laying down. What is the cause of this? What can I do to get temporary relief from this pain?

A: something is wrong definitely. go for second opinion. For wisdom teeth problem it is better to be seen by a dentist with a oral and maxillofacial surgery degree

Q: Do I see a doctor or dentist about jaw pain?
I have had a constant nagging jaw pain for two weeks. Hurts even more even when chewing something as easy as a wrap with hummus. Pain is only on one side. Hurts up to the ear, down the jaw line and now radiationg down my neck.

A: It is hard to tell if you need to see a doctor or dentist without taking a look at the problem. If it hurst when you open and close your mouth (without actually biting down), I would lean toward a doctor. If it hurts most when you bite down, I would think about the dentist. If you have bad teeth, I would lean toward the dentist. If it hurts to tap on your teeth, try the dentist.

Q: Can TMJ disorder cause stiffness and pain in the jaw joint?
I awoke with jaw pain and chewing is very painful. Is this temporary? What can I do to make the pain stop. I can’t eat regular food, but thankfully it only hurts when I chew or turn my head.

A: TMJ disorders do not normally appear suddenly. There is usually a history of clicking or popping or headaches.

You may have just temporarily dislocated you jaw in your sleep. Regardless, you should see a dentist that knows about TMJ. Do not go to an oral surgeon or traditional orthodontist.
