Q: what are normal blood sugar levels for non fasting afternoon blood test?

A: I received this list of numbers at a recent diabetic education class from an endocrinologist that was a guest speaker. He handed them out to everyone. They are updated, and are only for those that have diabetes.

Fasting
110 excellent
140 acceptable
180 fair
2 hours after meal
140 excellent
180 acceptable
235 fair

Q: What is a normal/good blood sugar level for some one who has not fasted?
I have a history of diabetes in me family. I have all the symptoms of type 2. I’m just curious about what is a good/normal blood sugar level on a normal day for some one who has not fasted or done anything special.

A: Hi,

In the United States it is normally between 85 and 120 after fasting, and anyplace between 100 and 150 after eating – but if shortly after eating some cake, it might even spike to 200 without to much worry, as long as the reading falls to under 150 in a hour.

People with a normally operating pancreas will produce adequate insulin, and then reduce the blood sugar level by changing the high sugar levels into body fat, and that can happen about as fast as the body is normally absorbing the food out of the small intestines.

Good Luck!

Q: Normal blood sugar levels.. but could I still have Insulin Resistance?
I’m in the process of getting a diagnoses for PCOS. I have many of the symptoms but this question, I’m focusing on sugar levels and insulin resistance.
I have a blood test, part of which was to look at my blood sugar levels and they came back normal.. would this rule out insulin resistance or could I still have insulin resistance?
I’m obese, and I don’t eat a lot, and yet I’m still putting on weight so I feel I must have insulin resistance that’s related to PCOS but I’m not sure since I have normal blood sugar levels.

Thanks in advance.

A: ya need a 2 hour glucose tesr and A1C……………..then you will know

Q: Am I experiencing normal blood sugar levels?
Hey everyone! My doctor and I think I may be having hypoglycemic episodes or I am not consuming enough protein throughout my day. The doctor set me up for a glucose tolerance test but it was unsuccessful because the drink made me very sick and I vomited. The back up plan has been to buy a glucose monitor and check it through out the day. I started this testing regiment today… I have posted the results below.

-9:47am – Just woke up; before breakfast test. Blood sugar 88mg
-12:03pm – Had breakfast at 10am which included 1/3 omelet with sausage, cheese, and bacon pieces, 1 cup orange juice, and 1 kashi pumpkin flax bar; blood sugar 95mg

Do these readings represent normal blood sugar levels or are they too low? I believe that my morning test is good at 88, however, I am worried about my post breakfast test at 95. Any insight would be much appreciated!!!

Thanks everyone!

A: Normal blood sugar levels range (depending on the laboratory) from 70-120 mg/dL. Both your levels were within a normal range, pre and post meal. Hemoglobin A1c testing would be a better measure of indicating whether your blood sugar levels were too high overall for a period of time. However, there is no adequate test to verify if your blood sugar levels are chronically low (from insulin overdose) other than evaluating how you feel, or a glucose tolerance test.
You would need at least 3 weeks of daily testing after fasting (eating your breakfast and checking your sugar levels 30 min before eating and 1 hour post meal) to determine whether you had any noticeable trends. Keep on doing what you are doing and maintain a daily diary to show your endocrinologist when next you see him/her.

Q: Dizziness, headache, fatigue, normal blood sugar levels– PLEASE help…?
I was diagnosed with (non-severe) hypoglycemia about 2 months ago.

I’ve been eating right and all.

For the past couple days, I’ve felt like crap. I get dizzy, I get epic headaches, and I get really tired. When I go to check my blood sugar levels, they’re normal. Also, it doesn’t matter when I last ate. It may happen 2 hours after I eat, 1 hour after, or anytime before.

A bit about me:
-I’m a computer/video game geek.
-I don’t do sports.
-Even though I’m not sports active, I like to hike and trail walk and I can do it for a while.
-I can’t run more than quarter of a mile without being SERIOUSLY tired and out of breath.
-I drink a lot, so it’s not dehydration.
-This happens on a weekly basis.
-I can lift and carry over 80lbs of weight with both arms, about 35lbs with each.
-There’s nothing wrong with my blood– cholesterol is good, thyroid and everything. Only issue is the low blood sugar.
-I’ve been this way since I was around 12 (when I was sports/P.E. active), I’m 15 now.
-I’m 5′2 and 103lbs.

Has anyone ever experienced this? Could someone give me an idea to what it may be? My family likes to blame it all on the hypoglycemia, but I’m fairly sure that’s not what it is. I’m really confused. HELP! D;
Also, I sweat a lot. And when this kind of thing happens, I get shaky and weak.
Yes, I am a girl. XD
Oh. When I cry, I also lose breath and hyperventilate.

A: You didn’t even say your gender, though I am assuming that you are female. No self-respecting male would brag about only being able to lift 35lbs in each arm… However, I would say that you should be able to run for 1.5 miles if you are in decent shape.

I would attribute your dizziness, headache and fatigue to a lack of oxygen. Try breathing deeper or doing yoga breathing exercises from Youtube. Remember, it’s not fast, but deeper that helps. Also, breathe with your stomach and not with your chest.

But I am not a doctor, so my opinion is just an opinion.

Q: What are normal Blood sugar levels?
I had gestational diabities 2 out of my 3 pregnancies. Now I am having trouble when I get up in the mornings my blood sugar levels are over 100 not all the time but ofter. I can tell too because I will be very hot and sweaty. The sometimes I will get up and it will be low. Sometimes as low as 67. When it is like this I will eat a bowl of cereal and within 15 min. it is at 145. Is this normal. I do sweat a lot at night and am very hot where I use to be cold. I just don’t understand why it is up and down a lot.

A: Normal ranges for a NON diabetic are 70 to 99 fasting and 70 to 139 two hours after a meal. For a person that has diabetes a fasting is 110 to 180 and two hours after a meal 140to 235. These numbers are from an endocrinologist. 67 is considered to be hypoglycemic levels Yes it is normal for your blood sugar to be 145 right after eating. Your readings are not out of normal range for a non diabetic person. You need to check with your doctor and see if your are having some other kind of problem. When your readings are higher in the morning, it could be that your ate something that contained a lot of carbs the night before and when it is low in the morning, could be you ate nothing the night before. How old are you? You could be have early signs of menopause. It is not uncommon for women around 35 to have symptoms. Check with your doctor. Hormonal changes can also cause blood sugar readings to bounce around.

Q: High Insulin but Normal blood sugar levels?
have had tests done to find out why i have had recurrent miscarriages.
Today I got the results and one of the issues is that I have high insulin levels but my sugar levels are normal.
The doctor has prescribed metformin to regulate / reduce my insulin. I’m aware this is usually used for PCOS(which I have no sign of) but I was wondering if anyone else had / has heard of this.
Please note I do NOT have PCOS
OK I had glucose tolerance tests, I was tested for PCOS, lupus and about a million other things (they took 10 tubes of blood).
I also had ultrasounds which were normal (in conjunction with the blood tests).

A: yeah u are right ,it is part of PCOD!!
metformin certainly regularises the insulin secreation.
all the best

Q: How long does it take for blood sugar levels to become normal after eating chocolate?

A: A little while, when your blood sugar is low your best off having a sugary drink. Sugars in liquids are absorbed into the blood stream alot faster then when they are in solids =)

Q: Can a pre-diabetic person go back to a normal blood sugar level?
I am pre diabetic because usually my fasting blood sugar ranges from 90-115.

I am thin and tall.21 yrs old, female. My mom has diabetes, so my chances of getting diabetes is high.

If I keep doing exercises and not eat heaps of sweets, will I be able to have a normal blood sugar level without being pre diabetic again?

Is there a risk for a pre diabetic person to develop diabetes when pregnant?

A: Focus your attention on a low glycemic index diet. Google for it. Healthiest way to eat there is, and essential for diabetics.

Since you’re already thin and exercise, not much else you can do there. If you’re gonna get diabetes, well, you’re just gonna get it.

Check your blood sugar maybe once a month, fasting, and 2 hours after eating a meal with some sugar in it. Should be <90 and <140.
Higher than that, see your doctor.

Pregnancy often causes blood sugar problems.

Q: What is a normal blood sugar level?
I have been trying to lose weight and decided to monitor my blood sugar level. It has ranged anywhere from 67-97. Does not seem to matter if I fast or eat. Does this fall in the “normal range”?

A: Normal Fasting Blood Sugar
A normal fasting blood sugar (which is also the blood sugar a normal person will see right before a meal) is:

83 mg/dl (4.6 mmol/L) or less.

Many normal people have fasting blood sugars in the mid and high 70 mg/dl (3.9 mmol/L) range.

Though most doctors will tell you any fasting blood sugar under 100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/L) is “normal”, there are several studies that suggest that testing with a fasting blood sugar in the mid 90 mg/dl (5 mmol/L) range often predicts diabetes that is diagnosed a decade later.
Post-Meal Blood Sugar (Postprandial)
Independent of what they eat, the blood sugar of a truly normal person is:

Under 120 mg/dl (6.6 mmol/L) one or two hours after a meal.

Most normal people are under 100 mg/dl (5.5 mmol/L) two hours after eating.

You must pay attention to the time that you test. Otherwise your may be testing in vain.

Good luck Tin

Q: what is normal blood sugar levels. ?
my blood sugar one hour after lunch was 90. and after dinner was 83. i took it before i went to bed and it was 78. is that normal. and if not what should they be at

A: Normal blood sugar levels range from 60 – 120, depending on when you last ate. Fasting (no food for 8-12 hours) blood glucose is usually 60-100.

Q: Is this a normal blood sugar for an 11yr old that is constantly going to the bathroom and drinking alot?
I asked a question yesterday about my 11yr old stepdaughter that is constantly going to the bathroom and drinking alot during the daytime. She sometimes goes 2x a nite also. I talked to her mother and she said that she has a small bladder, which could be true but I had my sister in law test her blood sugar and it was 131. This was done about 1- 1 1/2 hrs after she ate supper. I am going to retake today to see what it is but I don’t know the best time. She said if it gets up to 150 go to the dr right away. She said it was a little high but nothing to be to concerned about since she had eaten. I don’t know anything about diabetes or normal blood sugar levels. I was just looking for a little help and some advice. thanks in advance to your answers.

A: According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is diagnosed as a casual (taken anytime) blood sugar greater than 199 along with symptoms OR a fasting blood sugar greater than 125.

This link is their position statement.
